Solar Panel Removal and Reinstallation for Roof Replacement

When a roof needs replacement after solar installation, the panels must be removed by a qualified electrical contractor before roofing work begins. CurrentRS provides solar panel removal, safe storage, and full reinstallation and recommissioning as a coordinated service.

Important: Solar panels involve live electrical circuits. They should never be removed by a roofing crew without solar electrical training. Improper removal risks panel damage, inverter damage, wiring damage, and serious safety hazards. Always use a licensed electrical contractor with solar experience for removal and reinstallation.

Why Solar Panels Must Be Removed for Roof Replacement

Roofing work cannot be performed beneath installed solar panels without removing them first.

Solar panels are mounted on racking systems anchored through the roof surface. The racking penetrations are sealed with flashing, and the panels sit above the shingle surface. To replace shingles, the racking must come off — and the panels must come off the racking first. There is no way to properly replace a roof under installed solar panels without full removal of the panel array.

What Happens During Solar Panel Removal

Removal is a structured electrical and mechanical process, not simply pulling panels off a roof.

A qualified technician begins by isolating the solar system — disconnecting from the utility interconnection and de-energizing all circuits. Each panel is then disconnected from the wiring harness, removed from the racking, labeled with its location and serial number, and placed in padded storage. Inverters, optimizers, or microinverters are assessed for condition. Racking and mounting hardware is removed and documented.

The roof surface is then handed off to the roofing crew in a clear condition, ready for replacement without solar equipment obstructing any area of the roof.

How Solar Panels Are Labeled and Stored

Proper labeling ensures reinstallation matches the original system design.

CurrentRS labels each panel with its roof position, wiring sequence, and serial number before removal. This ensures that reinstallation is an organized, accurate process. Panels are stored flat, protected from impact and weather, and kept clear of the roofing work area.

What Roofing Contractors Should Know

Roofing contractors working on solar homes should plan their project around the solar removal timeline.

The roofing project timeline must account for solar removal before roofing begins and solar reinstallation after roofing is complete. New flashing and penetration sealing must be coordinated between the roofing crew and solar reinstallation team. CurrentRS works directly with roofing contractors to coordinate this process efficiently.

What Happens During Reinstallation

Reinstallation mirrors the original installation process on a new roof surface.

After roofing is complete, CurrentRS installs new or reused racking onto the new roof surface with properly sealed penetrations, remounts panels in their original positions, reconnects all wiring, verifies system performance, and re-commissions the utility interconnection. A performance check confirms all panels and components are operating as expected before project close-out.

When Full Decommissioning May Be Better

If your solar system is old or damaged, replacement may offer better long-term value than reinstallation.

If your solar system is 15+ years old, uses discontinued equipment, has degraded panels, or has accumulated electrical damage, reinstalling the existing system may not be worth the cost. CurrentRS will assess your system's condition during removal planning and provide an honest comparison. Learn more about planning roof and solar together
