HomeBattery Backup Systems

Residential Battery Backup Systems

A home battery backup system stores solar energy and delivers it when you need it most — at night, on cloudy days, and during grid outages. CurrentRS designs battery systems around your specific home load, backup goals, and solar production.

Solar without battery backup is a bill-reduction tool. Solar with battery backup is a resilience tool. For homeowners who want protection from outages, not just lower utility bills, battery storage is an important piece that helps bridge the gap between daylight production and more reliable around-the-clock power.

How Battery Backup Works

A home battery stores excess solar production and releases it on demand.

Solar panels produce peak power during midday. Most of that production exceeds what your home uses at that moment. Without a battery, excess power flows to the grid (and earns a net metering credit). With a battery, that excess charges the battery first. When the sun sets or clouds arrive, the battery discharges to power your home — reducing your reliance on grid-priced electricity. During a grid outage, the battery (paired with solar) can operate independently to maintain power to your home.

Whole-Home Backup vs. Critical-Load Backup

The difference is how many circuits the battery supports during an outage.

Critical-load backup powers a selected subset of your home's circuits — refrigerator, lighting, medical devices, phone charging. It requires less battery capacity and is typically lower cost.

Whole-home backup powers all circuits, including HVAC, water heaters, and large appliances. It requires more battery capacity and a more sophisticated interconnection. Battery Sizing

Correct battery sizing depends on your home's load and your backup duration goals.

We analyze your average daily electricity consumption, your peak load moments, your critical circuits, and your solar production to size the battery correctly. A system undersized for your goals will leave you without power too quickly. A system oversized without a plan to use that capacity is unnecessary cost. CurrentRS designs battery systems to match your specific needs.

Battery Lifespan and Reliability

Most residential batteries are warranted for 10 years with thousands of charge cycles.

Modern lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium-ion battery systems are designed for daily cycling over many years. Manufacturers like Enphase and Tesla warranty their systems for 10 years. Proper installation, appropriate operating temperatures, and avoiding deep discharge cycles extend battery life. CurrentRS installs batteries in conditioned or protected spaces where possible and programs charge/discharge settings to maximize lifespan.

Grid-Tied Battery Systems and Hybrid Design

Most home batteries remain connected to the grid and charge from both solar and grid power.

A grid-tied battery system charges primarily from solar but can also charge from the grid — useful for time-of-use optimization, storm preparation, or overnight backup pre-loading. When the grid fails, the system automatically isolates and operates in backup mode. This is sometimes called a hybrid solar system: solar + battery + grid connection working together. Backup Limitations to Understand

Battery backup is powerful but has real-world limitations that should be understood before installation.

A battery system has finite capacity. High-draw appliances — electric ranges, dryers, HVAC at full load — can deplete a battery faster than expected. Extended multi-day outages without solar recharging require additional battery capacity or generator integration. CurrentRS is transparent about what a given battery configuration will and won't support, so homeowners can make informed decisions.
