A separate modular equipment family

Current RS offers Schneider Electric XW Pro inverter/charger systems with the Schneider Backup Control Switch (BCS). When properly designed, this modular equipment family can provide planned whole-home or critical-load battery backup. It is a separate architecture alongside the Sol-Ark 18K, not another name for the same system.

This article covers the North American XW Pro 6848 NA, 865-6848-21, in 120/240V split-phase operation, and BCS 2200, 865-BCS-2200. Primary references are the manufacturer-hosted Multi-unit Design Guide 990-91373C, September 2022 and BCS datasheet, matching the supplied document identifiers. IEC 8548 and three-phase examples are not interchangeable with these NA residential configurations. This is an application overview, not a wiring or programming guide; qualified personnel must design and commission the actual system.

Modular architecture and parallel configurations

Coordinated parallel inverter/chargers increase conversion capacity. The ecosystem also needs a supported battery/DC distribution arrangement, protection, communications, source switching and solar conversion equipment. Unlike the Sol-Ark 18K, XW Pro does not contain the same three integrated PV MPPT inputs; DC-coupled PV uses compatible external charge controllers.

The 2022 guide's supported-configuration table, printed page 24, distinguishes:

  • AC source, no BCS/external contactor: a supported two-inverter 120/240V arrangement with the internal-transfer limitations.
  • AC source, BCS or appropriate external contactor: two-, three- and four-inverter arrangements.
  • No AC source: up to four units without external switching in the separate off-grid category. This does not authorize a later grid/generator addition without redesign.

The BCS datasheet specifically lists up to four XW Pro units, part 865-6848-21. More inverters do not add battery energy, guarantee every motor start, expand service ratings or automatically provide redundancy.

Manufacturer multi-inverter ratings

The Manufacturer specifications table below reproduces NA Table 7, with BCS or external contactor, from 990-91373C. For two, three and four units respectively, continuous output is 13.6, 20.4 and 27.2 kVA at 25°C, and 12.0, 18.0 and 24.0 kVA at 40°C. The corresponding 30-minute peaks at 25°C are 17.0, 25.5 and 34.0 kVA, and grid-sell ratings are 12.0, 18.0 and 24.0 kVA. These are documented table values, not multiplied marketing surge numbers.

The separate two-unit NA table without BCS/external contactor has a 14.4 kVA 30-minute peak, not 17.0 kVA. The guide's footnotes address the 80% breaker-derating rule for continuous/grid-sell operation using maximum 60A breakers and breaker-trip characteristics limiting peak power. All battery, thermal and current-path restrictions remain applicable.

kVA is apparent power; kW is real power, related by power factor. Neither is stored battery energy in kWh. Do not silently interchange these units.

Continuous output versus surge

Continuous output is sustained power under the specified conditions. A 30-minute peak is a time-limited overload, not indefinite output. The NA single-unit datasheet separately gives 6.8kW continuous at 25°C, 6.0kW at 40°C, 8.5kW for 30 minutes and 12kW for 60 seconds at 25°C. Its grid-sell rating is 6.0kW.

The BCS datasheet advertises four units with up to 27kW continuous and 48kW peak, but does not state a peak duration in that headline. It cannot replace the guide's 34.0kVA, 30-minute four-unit peak or be promised as continuous output. Units, rounding, duration and actual topology require technical reconciliation. Motor starts also depend on simultaneous loads, voltage, battery/BMS delivery and temperature.

The 60A internal transfer-relay limitation

Each XW Pro has a 60A internal transfer relay. The guide explains that when backed-up load AC current exceeds 60A and an AC source is present, a BCS or external contactor is required to connect the units collectively to that source rather than rely on their asynchronous internal relays.

Without appropriate external switching, the guide limits backed-up AC Out loads to 60A. Adding relay ratings does not establish an approved 120A, 180A or 240A transfer path. Larger supported grid-connected three-/four-unit split-phase systems use the documented external-switch architecture; a two-unit design above the supported internal-relay load envelope needs the applicable external arrangement too.

BCS integration and 200A service applications

The BCS is a microgrid interconnect device, not an inverter or battery. It isolates the grid during an outage so a properly designed system can supply protected loads. Its datasheet lists 120/240VAC, 60Hz, single phase and 200A maximum mains current.

It supports whole-home or subpanel layouts with up to a 200A rating and is suitable as service equipment only with the required compatible main AC breaker installed. The optional main-breaker range is 100–200A. Actual installed breaker, bus, conductor, protection and service requirements still govern. Two sets of backup-load lugs do not make it a 400A switch.

200A mains capability is not 200A of inverter-generated backup power. Outage output depends on the inverter stack, bank and load envelope. These primary documents do not establish a Schneider 400A residential service solution, and this article makes no such claim.

The BCS is NEMA Type 3R outdoor-rated; XW Pro is NEMA Type 1 for indoor use. Their environmental requirements differ. The BCS datasheet's 50ms transition and the inverter's internal-relay 8ms typical figure describe different arrangements, not universally interruption-free power.

BCS versus an external contactor

BCS integrates an import/export meter and CTs and offers an optional non-backup circuit. A generic contactor is not automatically equivalent in metering, export control, service-equipment approval or supported features.

Review Features that are Not Available with BCS or External Contactor Configurations, printed page 59 of the 2022 guide. It lists Load Shave, Search Mode and Generator Support for supplementing loads above generator rating among the unavailable features in the referenced configurations.

For external-contactor arrangements, the section also specifies a single AC source (grid or generator), restrictions on certain AGS load-start/stop and cooldown functions, and altered source/load metering/reporting. Its PV self-supply/grid-sell-limiting guidance identifies DC-coupled-PV and compatible external-meter conditions for an external contactor; a footnote distinguishes the BCS integrated WattNode meter. Do not promise identical export controls or full-system reporting for every topology. Check these 2022 restrictions against applicable newer guidance and firmware; general marketing claims do not override them.

Whole-home versus critical-load backup

Whole-home connection puts intended panel loads inside the backup boundary but does not guarantee simultaneous operation of every appliance. Electric heat, EV charging and multiple HVAC units may need exclusion, scheduling or load management.

Critical-load backup protects a selected subpanel/circuit set and can preserve energy for priority uses. The BCS datasheet illustrates both layouts and an optional non-backup panel. Those non-backup circuits do not automatically receive battery power. Assess running/starting loads, 120V balance, usable energy, outage priorities, protection, neutral/ground treatment, bypass and utility/AHJ requirements.

AC-coupled solar and existing-system retrofits

Supported AC coupling may retain an existing PV inverter/microinverters. The BCS illustrations include optional AC PV, but do not approve every brand/model or its outage operation. The XW Pro operation guide requires compatible frequency control.

Verify the exact inverter and firmware, allowed capacity, production curtailment, battery charge acceptance, backup boundary, reconnection and low-charge restart. Ordinary grid-following solar outside a supported islanded arrangement must not be assumed to work in an outage. Document existing interconnection approvals and equipment condition before proposing a retrofit.

DC-coupled solar and battery-bank design

DC-coupled PV charges through compatible external MPPT controllers. The BCS datasheet lists MPPT 60 150, 80 600 and 100 600 families; actual string voltage/current and array limits belong to the selected controller's instructions.

The NA inverter datasheet lists 48V nominal batteries, 40–64V input, 180A maximum DC input per inverter and 140A maximum charging per inverter in 120/240V mode. These are interface limits, not universal battery settings. Chemistry and voltage alone do not prove compatibility, system listing or warranty coverage.

Design the coordinated bank/DC arrangement for aggregate continuous and surge discharge and total charging from all inverter/chargers and solar controllers. Verify exact battery quantity/model, usable kWh, BMS control/current, communication, protection, disconnects, cables/bus, reserve and temperature. Adding inverter power does not add stored energy; battery current limits can restrict output despite remaining kWh.

Generator integration and external transfer equipment

Generator charging can be supported, but architecture matters. Selectable AC1/AC2 input limits of 3–60A per unit do not remove source-switch or bank limitations. The cited guide makes Generator Support above generator rating unavailable in its BCS/contactor configurations; charging is not the same as that assistance function.

The external-contactor single-source restriction means grid and generator cannot casually be added together. Resolve manufacturer-supported source selection and any additional external transfer equipment. BCS alone is not blanket approval of every generator transfer arrangement. Check voltage/frequency, charging allocation, isolation, neutral/ground, automatic-start accessory and allowed AGS triggers/cooldown.

Synchronization, communications and commissioning

The 2022 guide uses master/slave terminology for coordinated primary/secondary roles. Units require matching firmware and correctly configured Xanbus networking and source/load/battery associations. Unsynchronized outputs cannot simply be joined.

Use the supported InsightHome/InsightFacility gateway and proper network termination. BCS auxiliary control and meter connections have different purposes from Xanbus; one working network does not prove the whole system is commissioned. Qualified verification must address grid loss/return, isolation, sharing, bypass and failure behavior. Stacking does not guarantee automatic redundancy or medical/life-safety continuity.

Newer references and unresolved specifications

Checked October 10, 2026: official manufacturer listings identify NA Installation Guide 990-91228E-01 and Operation Guide 990-91227F-01, January 2023, plus BCS Installation Guide TME23564, June 2023, listed version 1.0. These are newer supporting documents. The retrieved multi-unit PDF remains 990-91373C, September 2022; no verified later revision or explicit wholesale supersession was located. This does not prove no newer guidance exists.

The NA datasheet footer is DS20230313, despite a 2021 URL folder. The retrieved BCS datasheet lacks a clear revision/date. Record the 27kW/48kW headline versus exact kVA/temperature/duration tables, transfer-time distinctions and any source/feature differences for technical review. Detailed comparison with the newer BCS power/feature instructions and actual approved firmware remains open. Official document listings also warn that current documents may reference obsolete products; confirm availability and support.

Use the related Sol-Ark 18K, whole-home battery sizing and existing-solar retrofit drafts below to compare complete supported designs. Do not transfer Sol-Ark-specific dual-inverter service claims to Schneider equipment. Current RS's XW Pro/BCS offering is owner-confirmed, not a claim of manufacturer certification or a tested third-party pairing.

Homeowner questions

Does the BCS200A rating mean200A of battery backup?

No. It is the mains/service rating, conditional on proper main breaker and installation. Inverter stack, battery and protected-load design limit outage output.

Why do larger systems require external source switching?

Internal60A relays operate asynchronously and cannot be added to create a higher-current transfer rating. The guide calls for collective switching for an AC source and backup loads above60A.

What do two, three and four units provide?

Applicable Table7 lists13.6,20.4 and27.2kVA continuous at25°C,with lower40°C values. Duration-specific peaks and actual delivery depend on the complete approved design.

Is48kW peak continuous output?

No. The BCS headline leaves duration unspecified. GuideC separately gives34.0kVA for30minutes at25°C for four units. Units, duration and topology need review.

Will every whole-home appliance run at once?

Not necessarily. Large loads may need management or exclusion. Critical-load backup can preserve energy for priority uses.

Can existing solar or a generator be included?

Potentially in a supported design. Exact AC PV frequency control or DC charge controllers, source switching, charging and configuration-specific generator restrictions must be verified.

Do these documents support a Schneider400A residential solution?

No. The BCS is rated up to200A,and these documents do not establish a Schneider400A service arrangement. Sol-Ark-specific claims cannot be transferred.

Do newer manuals replace the2022 guide?

Newer2023 supporting manuals were located, but no verified later multi-unit revision or explicit wholesale replacement was found. Differences remain qualified technical-review items.
